By Leaps and Bounds the Annual “Bunny Hop” is a Huge Success!

Once again, Village at Proprietors Green extends a heart-felt thank you to all of the professionals who attended the annual networking event. The celebration is the community’s way of showing appreciation for all of the professionals who refer clients to our retirement living community and one of our three housing and care options, independent living, assisted living, or memory care.

The Bunny Hop event for professionals would not be complete without the “Easter Bunny” being well represented. Lynda Chuckran, director of community relations for Welch Senior Living, waves to some adoring fans as she greets Maureen Celorier, RN, liaison team leader for the South Region, Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, Partners Healthcare at Home.

Partner with Your Parents for Next Steps in Retirement Living

It’s never easy coming to a crossroads at which the decision we make in concert with our parents will have a major impact on life. But, as circumstances and priorities change, deciding to move to a retirement living community can make life better than ever.

Talk it through – Together
Parents and their adult children can make excellent decision-making partners, especially when one or both get the feeling it’s time to investigate senior living options. Just like other decisions, considering a major move can be daunting; it may be tempting to avoid it altogether. But talking it through, gathering information, weighing the pros and cons of every option, and finding out exactly what life can be like in an assisted living community often makes the choice clear.

Here are some tips for older adults and their adult children:

  • Start thinking and talking about the things in your daily routine or that of a loved one that are challenging, cause unhappiness or anxiety, or take time away from the things you love to do.
    • Is the house too big to keep clean and well maintained?
    • Is going up and down stairs becoming difficult or unsafe?
    • Do you fret every time it snows because you’re concerned about plowing, shoveling, or slipping on the ice?
    • Do you still feel confident driving?
    • Are you taking your medications regularly and on time?
    • Have shopping or cooking become too much of a chore?

Recognizing challenges and bringing them out in the open allows you to think about how best to address them.

Brainstorm together about how you can make life easier so everyone can relax and discover peace of mind.

  • Would downsizing your home make things simpler and add more enjoyment?
  • Would moving to an independent or assisted living community, where everything from transportation to coordinating medical appointments to meals, make life easier and more fun?
  • Would you like to meet new people, try new things, and have activities you enjoy at your fingertips?

At Village at Proprietors Green, we are here to assist you. When you tour with us we want you to meet residents and staff. We want you to get a feel for the activities and entertainment we offer, and the values we hold dear.

Good Hearing Boosts Confidence and Enriches Social Interactions

Did you know that one in two people age 65 and older have some degree of hearing loss? According to the Mayo Clinic website, gradual hearing loss is common as we age. It can have a negative impact on quality of life, but it doesn’t have to. Rather than avoiding social occasions, not participating in conversations, and increasing the risk of becoming anxious or depressed, why not solve the problem?

Step one is recognizing the symptoms of hearing loss. They include:
· Conversations and other sounds being muffled
· Trouble hearing when there is background noise or when you’re in a group of people
· Having to ask others to repeat what they’ve said
· Having to ask people to speak more slowly, clearly and/or loudly
· Needing to turn up the volume when listening to music, television or radio

For some reason, many people deny having hearing issues, but it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Just like any other health issue, reporting your symptoms to your healthcare provider is the next step. After listening to what you’ve been experiencing, he or she will likely refer you to an audiologist – a healthcare professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating hearing and balance issues.

Step three is to work with your audiologist to identify the reason for your hearing loss, evaluate the degree to which it has progressed, and decide on the best course of treatment. With the assistance of hearing aids or other interventions, the vast majority of people notice significant improvement. They are able to regain the ability tune in and chime in on conversations with friends and loved ones better than they have in a very long time.

Creating New Memories Keeps the Old Ones Sharp Too

Good news! The AARP’s Global Council on Brain Health just released a new report that says social activities and close ties to family and friends may “help keep your mind sharp and your memories strong.” Noting that brain function is affected by a combination of the quantity, quality, type, and purpose of our social connections, the report emphasized the importance of engaging with others in meaningful ways. To that end, Village at Proprietors Green is always searching for new and engaging opportunities that involve family and friends or taking up a new hobby.

According to AARP, in a survey of people age 40 and older on which the report was based, those who said they were happy with their social lives were more likely to say their memory and thinking skills had increased in the past five years, but those who were not said theirs had declined. Also noted were obstacles to maintaining a rich social life such as health problems, mobility challenges, and living in a place that limits opportunities.

There are no barriers to a rich social life at Village at Proprietors Green. Residents take ballroom dancing classes, participate in art shows, attend author lectures and Audubon presentations, inter-generational celebrations, and so much more!

Isn’t it nice to know that there’s yet another way to help your brain work to its greatest potential? Just make it a point to engage in the activities you enjoy, try out a few new ones, and extend your social circle to include old friends, new friends, and family members young and old.
