Alzheimer’s Expert Peter Ham speaks at Village at Proprietors Green

More than 50 people gathered recently at Village at Proprietors Green to participate in a presentation on Alzheimer’s disease by Peter Ham, licensed mental health counselor and former vice-president for programs and services at the Massachusetts/New Hampshire chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Village at Proprietors Green features three distinct neighborhoods, independent living, traditional assisted living and memory care.

Mr. Ham’s presentation, “Understanding loved ones with dementia: Coping and learning how to help,” drew family members and adult children of individuals dealing with a memory disorder. He talked about how best to understand and interact with someone with dementia, and how loved ones can gain acceptance as they learn how to help a family member or friend through the diagnosis.

The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. On the Association’s website, 10 early signs of the memory disorder are identified. A few include: memory loss involving recently learned information; difficulty developing and following plans that include working with numbers; and having a hard time finishing common and familiar day-to-day tasks. The program offers the comforts of home and specialized care within a secure, supportive neighborhood. The program features 24-hour supervision, a personalized service plan, medication management, and hydration program – all by an expertly trained staff. Additionally, the neighborhood offers bright, open common spaces and a large enclosed outdoor patio, with umbrella tables and ample seating. Delicious, well-balanced meals and snacks are an essential part of the program.
