Jolene Brackey - “Creating Moments of Joy” Author at Proprietors Green

Jolene Brackey author of Creating Moments of Joy presenting

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 5/27/2011

Author Jolene Brackey discussed how to create positive moments with family members who have Alzheimer’s disease during a presentation attended by more than 50 people last night at Village at Proprietors Green in Marshfield. Brackey, a national speaker and the author of “Creating Moments of Joy,” and several other books, says the goal for families and caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s should be on “creating perfectly wonderful moments,” rather than “perfectly wonderful days.” The evening was filled with emotion, inspiration and laughter.

Brackey encourages families and professionals caring for individuals coping with memory disorders to focus on “living in the moment.” She suggests emphasizing the positive, and offers practical ways to make meaningful connections, such as creating “Memory Boxes,” filled with special photographs of family and friends. She also recommends complimenting people dealing with dementia as a way to connect, rather than always correcting or trying to change certain behaviors. Before she founded Enhanced Moments (www.enhancedmoments.com), Brackey worked as an activity director in an Alzheimer’s special care unit.

The Memory Care Program at Allerton House at Proprietors Green offers 24 memory care suites and a seven-day, activity-based program. The goals of the program are to help residents to maintain the optimum level of functioning independence, maintain the highest quality of life possible, maximize strengths, minimize weaknesses and validate feelings. A monthly support group is also offered to caretakers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related memory disorders. Village at Proprietors Green, a Welch Healthcare & Retirement Group senior rental community, offers a continuum of care that includes independent living, assisted living and assisted living-memory care.
